About us
Horstmann was founded in 1946 and since that time it has been a successful family-owned company. Due to its long experience and the ongoing expansion activities in research and development we are today recognized as a leading manufacturer in medium voltage technology for:
- Short-circuit and earth fault indicator
- Voltage testers and voltage detecting systems
- Earthing devices and accessories
The worldwide distribution is covered by both our own highly qualified sales force and international representatives. Our products meet the highest quality requirements and are developed and manufactured in own production facilities in Germany. In order to respond to these demands, we have a very high vertical depth of production (e.g. own SMD assembly system) as well as an own research and development department with state-of-the-art testing and measuring equipment. Besides the electronics manufacturing, we have also a mechanical production facility for safety material.

Products & Services
- Short-circuit and earth fault indicator
- Voltage testers and voltage detecting systems
- Earthing devices and accessories
ComPass D
The ComPass D is particularly suitable for use in central substations in the medium-voltage grid that have a telecontrol connection. In addition to the short-circuit and earth fault functions, the ComPass D collects high-precision measured values of current, voltage and power from the station and makes them available for transmission to the control room.
A PT-100 sensor can also be used to monitor the transformer or station temperature, for example. Limit values can also be defined for all measured values, which can also be provided as alarms for the control room. Voltage coupling/measurement takes place capacitively via the VDIS system and/or via resistive (ohmic) voltage sensors.
Product features:
- Remote control option for 2 switching elements
- Communication via Ethernet with IEC 60870-5-104 protocol
- Clear error display and reading option on site:
2 directional arrow LEDs (A, B) and high-contrast OLED display
- Highly accurate current and voltage measurement with 0.5 %
- Monitoring of the variables voltage (U), current (I), load flow direction (A↑ or B↓ )
- Power factor (cos φ), power (P, Q, S), energy (E), temperature (T) and frequency (f)
- Suitable for all mesh types/star point treatments
- Earth fault detection with six different earth fault location methods, can also be combined
- Voltage coupling to capacitive and resistive (ohmic) sensors
- Limit value monitoring and remote signalling: U, I, P, Q, T
- Commissioning via USB connection with support for the ComPass Explorer and ScadaData configurator software
- Freely assignable binary inputs for recording and transmitting relevant status information from the system/station
- Freely programmable logic for defining the switching conditions
Added value:
- Fast error direction detection
- Highly accurate current and voltage monitoring
- Detection of limit violations
- Availability of measured values in the control room and on site
- Can be controlled remotely from the control room using the IEC 60870-5-104 protocol
- Automatic self-calibration of the capacitive voltage inputs, optionally with temperature compensation
Wega 2
The Wega is an integrated voltage detecting system. The device determines and displays the operating conditions of the medium-voltage systems according to EN 50110-1.

Smart Navigator 2.0
The Smart Navigator 2.0 is the ideal solution for monitoring overhead line networks. It detects short circuits with direction, voltage drops, overloads and other faults in the grid and reports them remotely without delay. It enables faster fault localization, provides data on network utilization and thus improved transparency
Product features:
- Nominal voltage range: 2.2 ≤ 69 kV (L-L)
- Min. load current for self-supply: 5 A
- Max. Continuous phase current: 600A
Added value:
- Short-circuit detection with direction – Reduces downtimes
- Overhead line monitoring – data for assessing the condition of the grid
- Innovative mounting – installation under voltage and from the ground possible
- Remote maintenance – configuration and updates without a technician on site
- Mobile radio via LTE or 450MHz
